Dominic Benhura’s Studio

The VanDusen exhibit will include several pieces by Zimbabwe’s preeminent sculptor Dominic Benhura, considered one of Africa’s greatest contributions to the world of contemporary art.

at his studio with raw stoneDominic Benhura’s Studio is next door to his actual home in a leafy middle class suburb of Harare called Greendale. He has approximately 10 other independent sculptors working with him at The Studio. To name but a few whose work we carry; Celestino Mukhavi, Eddie Masaya, Stanford Derere, and Raphael Machinjili. Dominic also has a number of assistants that help him punch out form and finish pieces off, whilst he will be checking on its progress the whole time.

Dominic was born in 1968, making him 3rd generation and one of Zimbabwe’s most famous success stories.

Dominic came from a humble background, from Tafara, a small township close to Harare. He is now one of the most recognised sculptors in the world. Next time you are in Atlanta Airport, take your time to go through the ‘walkway’ and look at his piece ‘Leap Frog’.

Dominic has received many awards and has presented his works personally to the United Nations, the European Commission and The Nelson Mandela Foundation to name but a few.

We are proud to have been the only representatives of his work in Canada, USA and the UK. We have worked with Dominic since our inception in 2000 and have seen each other grow, both professionally and personally.

Dominic has become one of Africa’s greatest contributions to the world of contemporary art and is a world-wide Ambassador of Zimbabwean sculpture.
