Roland Penrose & Farley Farm House

30 January 2010

Over all of these years I have built up a number of contacts within the arts business – with artists, dealers, galleries and importantly the clients – whom are based all over the world.  Everyone is important to us and our relationships with every individual is respectful.

Surprisingly it is a small world and one latest encounter with the late Roland Penrose’s son Antony Penrose, was invited to one of our exhibitions at Herstmonceux Castle in East Sussex, England. His parents old home in a village called Chiddingly, is now a Museum ‘Farley Farm House’.  The house has various original paintings by Ernst, Picasso and of course his father, to name just a few – his mother is also a famous photographer, the late Lee Miller.  Lee Millers Photographic Exhibition is touring round the world at present.

Roland Penrose was an English Surrealist painter and poet, best known for his exhibitions and books on the work of his friends Picasso, Ernst, Miró, Man Ray, and Tàpies.  Roland  was also the Chairman Of The Institute of Contemporary Arts in London.

In this capacity Roland Penrose, with his family (with Anthony at a very young age) was invited to Zimbabwe by  the Ministry Of Home Affairs (Rhodesia) with various other artistes in the late 50’s.

Last month I mentioned our work being on display at Farley Farm House, in East Sussex (Roland Penrose & Lee Miller’s old house) – they do infact have a great website, with all the details of the House and the collections which are currently on tour of these wonderful artists. Please visit www.farleyfarmhouse.co.uk

We no longer have a collection at Farley House, but they have several Zimbabwean Sculptures on display permanently from our collection and his late fathers.

A real treat here in Wimbledon. At Cannizaro Park a superb open-air exhibition of Zimbabwean sculpture. There were many pieces, large and small, and a wide variety of different stone used in imaginative ways. And, overall, a real sense of Africa, linked to a long artistic tradition.

I was told that many of the sculptors had been trained within their own families: a father, an uncle, a grandfather, passing on the old skills.
