Collector's Corner

Welcome to Collector’s Corner - Shona Sculpture, where we honor the visionary artists who sparked a global appreciation for Zimbabwean stone carving.

The Collector’s Corner – Shona Sculpture series pays tribute to the First Generation of Shona sculptors—pioneers whose creative genius laid the foundation for what is now one of Africa’s most celebrated art movements. Many of these groundbreaking artists are now over 70, and while some have passed on, their legacy continues to inspire new generations and collectors around the world.

Each generation that followed continues to build on this remarkable tradition, from the seasoned Second Generation artists in their 60s, to the innovative Third Generation in their 40s, and now the emerging Fourth Generation—young sculptors in their 30s bringing fresh perspectives while honoring their roots. Shona sculpture is often passed down through families, creating rich lineages of talent and technique. Notable sculpting families like the Nyanhongo’s, Mashaya’s, Mukomberanwa’s, and Mariga’s span several generations, making it important for collectors to know who the original sculptor in the family was.

In this section, you’ll discover rare and exceptional works by the First Generation of Shona sculptors—the very artists who shaped and defined the movement. Their age, experience, mastery, and international exhibition history greatly influence the value of their pieces, making them prized among collectors. Even when two sculptures are similar in size, the provenance and reputation of the sculptor can make one significantly more valuable.

Explore our Collector’s Corner to own a piece of Shona art history and celebrate the original voices of this extraordinary movement.
