Woman by Joseph Ndandarika – 1st Generation Shona Sculpture

$1,800.00

Joseph Ndandarika (1940–1991) was perhaps the most “theatrical” of the First Generation masters. While others sought the abstract spirit, Ndandarika sought the human story. His depictions of women are among the most revered in Shona sculpture, celebrated for their deep emotional intimacy and domestic grace.

A “Woman” by Ndandarika is rarely a static statue; she is a mother, a lover, or a matriarch caught in a moment of profound reflection.

Ndandarika’s background in painting and his early training with Father John Groeber at Serima Mission gave him a unique perspective on composition. He didn’t just want you to see the stone; he wanted you to feel the social fabric of the village.

“A woman is the center of the home. If you carve a woman, you are carving the foundation of our culture.” — Reflecting the philosophy of Ndandarika
