Joseph Ndandarika – 1st Generation Shona Sculpture

$1,800.00

Joseph Ndandarika (1940–1991) was a towering figure in African art, widely regarded as one of the most gifted and “universal geniuses” of the First Generation of Zimbabwean stone sculptors.

His work helped transform the “Shona Sculpture” movement from a local craft into a globally recognized fine art form.

Ndandarika’s masterpieces are found in major museums and private collections worldwide. Some of his most famous works include:

  • *Telling Secrets: A masterpiece of narrative sculpture showing two figures in a moment of intimate, whispered confidence.

  • Muroora (The Bride): A recurring theme where he explored the dignity and anxiety of young women in traditional Shona society.

  • *Magic Woman: Reflecting his deep connection to his grandfather, who was a n’anga (traditional healer).

Ndandarika’s influence extended into his own home. He was married to Locardia Ndandarika, who became Zimbabwe’s first prominent female stone sculptor after their divorce. His children, Ronnie Dongo and Virginia Ndandarika, also became respected artists, ensuring the “Ndandarika style” lived on through subsequent generations.
