Washington Matafi

Washington was born in Wedza, Zimbabwe in 1981. He started carving in 2000 as an apprentice to his well known ‘second generation artist’ and cousin brother Elvis Mamvura.

In 2003 Washington decided to go solo at his own place, he could now work on bigger pieces and experiment with style and technique. Washington’s unique pieces are mainly on Spring stone and green Opal stones. From then on Washington expanded his knots and twisting style in his sculpture.

His message in his sculptures aims to unite people from all walks of life the world over. In 2014 he introduced the three sided abstract. So far this form has been accepted very well in the market.
