Stephen Bakata

Born on the 6th September 1972 at Tafara Clinic, Harare, Zimbabwe from a Mozambican father and a mother who migrated into Zimbabwe. Attended school at Tsunhirano Primary and Tafara 2 High respectively.

My grandmother was a versatile ceramic potter in Murehwa, so I grew up making some cows and goats out of clay during primary school holidays. My solo career began late in 1989 alongside Mutare based sculptor Miguel Padaso, Collin Sixpence and Coster Balakasi after completing ‘O’ Level.

I am well versed in Shona and express views in that language than any other. My type of art is hybrid. It is a mixture of different myths and styles. Through my art, I want to search, learn, seek and preserve my culture.

Due to corruption, nepotism and tribalism that is prevailing in Zimbabwe I have personally distributed my work to countries such as South Africa, Mozambique, Australia, England, Sweden, USA, Holland, Netherlands, Germany and many others.

My advice to up-and-coming artists is that going overseas is not an indication of success but only work hard and chase your dreams with resilience.

Previous Exhibitions:

  • 1997 “Myth of Development”, National Gallery of Zimbabwe
  • 1998 Mythos Entwicklung, Heiligenschein oder scheinheiligkeit, Berlin
