Shine Muzika

Born on October 10, 1978, in the village of Chitaunhike, Zimbabwe, Shine Muzika is the eldest of four children. His father, Nyamapfeka Muzika, worked as a general laborer on a farm, while his late mother, Febby Mpesa, cared for the family. Despite financial hardships that limited his education to Grade 7 at Katawa Primary School, Shine’s determination and resilience shaped his journey.

Shine’s passion for sculpting was ignited while working as a general hand at the home of renowned abstract sculptor Brighton Sango. In 1992, Shine began sculpting soapstone pieces, and following Sango’s passing in 1993, he dedicated himself to creating abstract art inspired by his mentor. His early works quickly found buyers, affirming his talent and encouraging him to expand his craft.

From 1996 to 2006, Shine showcased his work at the Victoria Falls open market, where he transitioned to creating larger commissioned pieces. Since 2006, he has been based at the Mvurwi Art Centre, earning recognition for his talent, including the 2013 Certificate of Art and Culture Exhibition in Mvurwi town. Today, Shine’s sculptures, ranging from 20 cm to 3.5 meters, are celebrated for their abstract beauty and intricate craftsmanship, blending floral, human, and abstract forms.

His work has reached global audiences, with pieces displayed in South Africa’s Jusrock Gallery and collected internationally in America, Germany, the Netherlands, Australia, and beyond. Shine attributes his success to the support of his clients and the art community, whom he deeply thanks for keeping the spirit of Shona sculpture alive.
