Date of Birth:

Rodger Chawanda

Rodger is the third born in a family of seven and was educated and raised in the rural areas of Goromonzi in Zimbabwe. However due to financial problems he could not complete his education.

In 1988 he joined a construction company as a builder until 1998. When he left he returned to his rural home. Whilst at home he met his friend Richard and the following day Richard asked him if he would mind fishing with him. Both made their way to the river but before they did Richard stood nearby an opening in the mountain where some artists were sculpting stones. He then said to Rodger were not going to fish now we should look for stones and take them home and learn to carve. They each took 50kg of stones home and from there they began to sculpt and so began Rodgers career in sculpting.

Rodger has a deep-seated love of creatures which is reflected in his work. He soon realized that he had a hidden talent to sculpt and his art started emerging from his living environment. Preferring to sculpt creatures, figures abstracts and torsos.
