Richard Chiwasa

Richard was born in June 1947 in Harare and went to school at Ngandora Government Primary school up to Standard Six.

At first Richard started sculpting soapstone in 1967 and was then taught to sculpt on hard stones by Ganon Paterson an Anglican Priest at Nyarutsetso Art Centre during 1967 to 1970. He then left to work at Victoria Falls and stayed there for ten years under the ‘Craft Village’.

Richard now works in much harder stones, such as Verdite, Springstone, Opal and Butter Jade amongst others.

Richard has had two exhibitions in South Africa, at the Carlton Centre which were very successful. He worked with other great artists such as Sylvester Mubayi, Nicholas Mukomberanwa and the late Moses Masaya aswell as others.

Richard is married with six children, three girls and three boys. His advice to the young and up and coming artists is for them to work very hard and create more ideas.
