Obert Mukumbi was born in Zimbabwe on January 11th, 1974 in the village of Dengu in Bindura where he completed his O levels. In order to express his feelings and to earn a respectable living, he was encouraged to work in stone by his brother the accomplished sculptor Kennnedy Musekiwa when he was only 12 years old. Richard Magwenzi taught him the skills necessary to be a good sculptor.
Mukumbi’s art reflects the daily life of the Shona people through his ability to capture human expressions and relationships. When asked about his art, he replies, “In God and my Mudzimu, I trust i`m going to deliver quality pieces to all my customers all around the world using hard stones… exhibiting in each and every corner of those who are interested in my works.”
Obert is married to Lilian Ushawedunha and has two children, a boy and a girl.
