I am Mike Katsvanga born 17 July 1980 in Harare Zimbabwe. It all started with love of creative art whilst i was doing my ordinary level at Tafara High School.
After leaving school I started working as an assistant to Luxon Gutsa. He is the one who introduced me into stone carving, mostly I love sculpting birds.
At home we’ve always been keeping pigeons and to this day my love of birds has been a constant source of inspiration to me. I observe them closely and when carving them from raw stone I let them come to life.
In most cases it’s not that what comes out of a sculpture but what you have in mind. If I look at it very carefully it is more likely I’m just continuing with what has already been archived by nature. So leaving a bit of the stone raw it’s like feeling the past. Although I may feel that I’m creative but i began to realize that there are other forces out there which helps me create my pieces (sculptures). Creating a sculpture is more like going on a journey where on your way you meet people. You see lots of things which sometimes sort of change your ideas of a destination. But I kept on going and I hope one day of my adventuring people will understand and appreciate my works locally and internationally.
