Michael was born into a family of eight, six boys and two girls.
His inspiration for sculpting came from a friend called Gilbert Manyarara. He gave Michael an introduction into sculpting by giving him assisting tasks such assanding and polishing. By 1978 Michael was sculpting his own work.
In 1980 he moved from Mbare to Mabvuku, a high density suberb just outside Harare. He met other sculptors and they formed the Canon Patterson Art Centre, after some years the group disbanded and in 2001 Michael became a founder member of the ArtPeace Co-Operative in Mabvuku and Silveira House.
