Lucknos Chingwaro

I was born in February 1980 in Mukaera village in northern Zimbabwe. I come from a family that both among the sculptors in the Guruve region and in the religious community of Mukaera enjoys a high reputation. I began sculpting at the age of 12, and I really just wanted to be a football player (soccer) and sculpting was a pass time, I learn sculpting from my father Herbert Chingwaro and when my father fell ill, I had to sculpt in order to support the family.

In 1994 I joined the artistic community at Tengenenge, gave workshops and was soon one of the youngest sculptors of the artists’ village, which could earn one a living from sculptures alone. At the beginning sculpting was just a hobby but I was further encouraged by Tom Bloemfield and art become an in thing in me.

I went to Germany thrice in 2006, 2007 and 2009, during my time there I conducted workshops and exhibitions. When after the turn of the century the ownership and the responsibilities were difficulty in Tengenenge, I moved all the way back to Mukaera, then to Harare where I still live and do my work.

I describe myself as a religious, reserved, almost shy man. This is also reflected in my work.
