Ignatius Zhuwakiyi

The youngest of four children, Ignatius was born in 1969 in Harare and grew up in St Mary’s Township, Chitungwisa, where he attended Zengeza primary and secondary schools.  Difficulties, which face many Zimbabweans, prevented him from studying beyond his second year of high school.

Meeting Locardia Mdandarika and spending time on the weekends helping her was Ignatiuss introduction to sculpting.  In 1989 he started to become involved at Chapungu, meeting other young artists, learning new techniques, benefiting from their encouragement and experience

He was one of a number of young artists, Godfrey Machinjili, Vitalis Muchenje and Axilia Tatisa amongst them, who organised the Young Generation exhibition held at the John Boyne Gallery in 1990, and was happy to receive a B.A.T certificate at the end of that year.

He is now a full time artist, (currently experimenting with torsos), and enjoys sharing the company and mutual stimulation of others such as Ndandarika and Ronnie Dongo.

Married with one child, Ignatius goes to church, listens to the radio or reads when not working with his stones.
