Godfrey Matangira

“I think my sculptures are my contribution to this world and they mean a lot to me. I spend my time making unique sculptures, so each of the sculptures is part of my life.”

Godfrey was born in 1975 in Wedza, Zimbabwe. His grandmother, who was the mother of legendary sculptor Nicholas Mukomberanwa, raised him because his own mother had passed away.

During the holidays, he visited his uncles Nicholas Mukomberanwa and Albert Nathan Mamvura. At Mamvura’s workshop-studio he met many big artists, includingSylvester Mubayi, who encouraged Godfrey to try sculpting. Godfrey also went to Nicholass workshop in Ruwa, where he spent the holidays learning to use the tools to create unique pieces of sculpture.

Godfrey became serious about art so in 1998 he joined Nicholas Mukomberanwa full-time. After Nicholas death in 2002, he moved to Nesbert Mukomberanwas studio and worked with him until 2006. In 2007, Godfrey left to start working on his own. Godfrey is now a full-time artist at Chitungwiza Arts Centre.
