Gabriel Tandi was born in Mrewa in Mashonaland East Province and went to school at Bunhu Primary and did his secondary education at Muchinjike High School, both in Mashonaland East Province.

After completion of his secondary education in 1995 he went to Speciss College for the course of Motor Mechanics and completed the course in 1998.  Sadly he couldn’t find employment since his blood had a lot of potential in stone carving because of his grandfather and father who were all stone sculptors.  He also grew up practicing sculpting on small sculptures such as frog’s, birds and abstracts.

Gabriel began to be a full time sculptor from December 1998 and based himself in Chitungwiza Arts Centre.  He found many foreigners being interested in his works, so he deiced to make his roots firm in this trade.

He has had work exhibited in almost every European country, America and Asian countries.  He was nominated best creative sculptor at Chitungwiza Arts Centre in 2005.  He also has continuous orders to some buyers in America and at Funo Safaris.

Gabriel is planning to have many exhibitions and workshops in many foreign nations.  He specializes in fine art and abstracts, his major theme is daily life and Shona traditional cultures.   Working mostly on hard stones such as Leopard Rock and Verdite.

He quotes “I drew most of my inspiration from the divine influence, especially my grandfather Gabriel Tandi who was not taught by anyone and I believe he is the first sculptor of the first generation artists.  My father Thomas Tandi taught me how to carve and mainly on the finishing skills because he told me that a nice sculpture is determined by its finishing and proportion.  All of my five brothers are also sculptors including my aunt Ronica Tandi – we call her Queen of Art.
