Edson Muchena was born in Penhalonga, Mutare, Zimbabwe.

He is the fifth born in a family of eight and is married to Miriam Dangarembwa, they have four children, two girls and two boys; Melody, Melisa, Elson and Orlando.

Edson stays in Chitungwiza, a township outside of Harare the capital.   He did part of his primary education at St Augustine Mission grade 1-4, then 5-7 at Mundenda primary school where he also completed his secondary education in 1989.  At school he was very good in drawing and molding.  After completing his O’level education he worked for two years at a construction company in Mutare from 1991-1993.

As someone who was art minded he decided to join his cousin’s brother Caleb Samhere in carving and assisted him in cleaning finished products and polishing.  Motivated by the skills and knowledge of stone carving, Edson ventured into the lucrative market and related crafts.  As time went on he was given the opportunity to carve and that was when he proved he could to the job.  He started by carving verdite stone, a very hard stone to start first off.

Later on, with experience, he now carves Opal stone, Butterjade, Springstone, Verdite, Lapidolite, Leopard Rock, Fruit Serpentine, Hyena stone, Cobalt, wood and any types of hard stones.  Edson is ambitious and confident with his ability and is looking   forward to becoming one of the best local artists the world over and would like to compete with others.  He is also interested in training the young from a grass roots level.

Edson has been selling his products locally and abroad, especially in the USA and European countries.

Hobbies include watching TV, listening to the radio, watching soccer, volley ball, table tennis and reading.

He says “I enjoy eating sadza with stew, oxtail, vegetables, chicken, and rice, braai and traditional foods.  I like drinking fresh milk after work.  With God everything is possible.”
