Daniel (now late) was the 3rd born son of the famous first generation sculptor Joram Mariga, known as the ‘father of Zimbabwean sculpture’.

Daniel began sculpting in the early nineties, whilst still at school. He would help his father to finish off his sculptures, as is common in most families where one of the family members is an artist.

Daniel began to recall the legacy of his father with affection and recounts how often Joram would make sure that his work was not abstract but remained faithful to the Shona culture.

After completing his education Daniel began to sculpt full time. In 1995 he exhibited in a family exhibition at Chapungu Sculpture Park in Harare.

In 1998, at Chapungu Sculpture Park, he was a participant of The International Granite Sculpture Workshop & Symposium and there after began a 2 year artist residency programme.

In 1999 Daniel’s work was being exhibtied in different countries in Europe and in 2001 he travelled to the Netherlands and Belgium where he was able to work with Italian marble -gleened and graced to work in hard stones by his father.

He found himself travelling to Sweden the same year to work in a sculpture park in Kronan and was commissioned to make a piece called “Eye Witness”.

Sadly Daniel didn’tcomplete hisambitions in the ever-widening world of Zimbabwean stone sculpture.
