Born in December 1982 in Mashonaland West, Zimbabwe, Cornelius Mako is a talented Shona sculptor whose artistic journey was deeply influenced by the renowned sculptor Colleen Madamombe. Educated at Kutama, he discovered his passion for sculpture at an early stage and quickly developed his craft under Madamombe’s mentorship. Her guidance was instrumental in shaping his artistic vision, inspiring him to pursue a professional career in sculpture.
Cornelius Mako is known for his expressive and emotionally compelling pieces that tell profound stories through stone. One of his most celebrated works, Welcome (2015), captures the heartfelt reunion of a woman welcoming her husband home after years of working in the diaspora. The piece showcases Mako’s mastery of form, emotion, and storytelling, illustrating the spiritual and cultural depth embedded in Shona sculpture.
Following the untimely passing of his mentor in 2000, Mako continued refining his craft alongside other notable artists, including Aaron Kapembeza. Today, he is based in New Tafara, Harare (House No. 5195), where he exhibits and showcases his sculptures. Despite his immense talent, he remains an underappreciated artist whose work continues to captivate art lovers and collectors alike.
