Born into a family of artists, Vengai Chiwawa began sculpting at an early age under the guidance of his father, Edward Chiwawa, a renowned Zimbabwean sculptor. Growing up in Chitungwiza, Harare, he developed a deep passion for stone carving, shaping his artistic journey from childhood.
Artistic Journey
- 1982-1990: Started sculpting under the mentorship of his father at their home studio in Chitungwiza, Zimbabwe.
- 1990: At age 15, he dedicated himself fully to sculpting.
- 1994: Joined the prestigious Tengenenge Art Community in Mvurwi, led by Tom Bloemfield, further refining his skills.
Education & Professional Growth
- 1995-1997: Studied for a Diploma in General Business Practice at the Academy of Learning.
- 1996-1997: Completed a Business English home study program with Business Training Limited, Manchester, England.
International Recognition & Exhibitions
Vengai’s work has gained global recognition, with exhibitions and residencies across Europe, North America, and Africa.
- 1999: Worked as a salesman at Alzgalerie, Truchtlaching, Germany, and exhibited his work there.
- 2001: Invited to exhibit at Het Slot Zeist, Holland.
- 2002: Participated in workshops organized by Into Africa Gallery, Wernsbach, and Shona Art Gallery, Hamburg, Germany.
- 2003-2004: Exhibited in Germany, Netherlands, and Het Slot Zeist, working as an artist-in-residence.
- 2005: Represented Zimbabwe at the Agio International Symposium in South Korea.
- 2006: Participated in the In Praise of Women exhibition organized by the African Millennium Foundation in Canada and the USA.
- 2007: Engaged in art workshops for children, including those with disabilities, in Germany.
- 2008-2010: Continued showcasing his art at major exhibitions in Germany, Netherlands, Canada, and Zimbabwe, including HIFA and the Sanganai Travel Expo.
- 2014-2015: Artist-in-residence at Zimart Gallery, Canada, and exhibited in Toronto, Montreal, and England.
- 2016-2017: Exhibited at Hetzmoceoux Castle, England, and Chitungwiza Art Centre, with support from the Brook Foundation (USA).
Leadership & Impact
- 2010: Joined the Shona Art Centre as a member.
- 2011: Appointed Vice Chairperson of the Shona Art Centre, playing a pivotal role in promoting Zimbabwean sculpture.
- 2012-Present: Continues to exhibit internationally while working from his studio in Chitungwiza.
