Date of Birth:

Wiston Nyekete

My name is Wiston Nyekete

I was born on the new year’s day in 1971 in Buhera district. I went to school from 1979 up to my O’ level in 1989 still in my rural home before moving into Harare, where I started working in industry in construction and engineering.

My life was never attached to any artistic background until when I fell sick with T.B. and had to leave my job at a mine in 1999 which became the turning point of my life. I had to relocate from Chegutu where I was working to Chitungwiza during my treatment days. It is the period which I started visiting Chitungwiza Arts Centre and subsequently I fell in love with sculpture.

I got so inspired when I saw young people taking the challenges of creating their own productions, and I thought I should be a better challenger. In engineering I acquired skills and I thought I could easily transfom those skills into art. I am a fan of wild life and nature. That encouraged me to work on wild life around my preferred theme “LIVING IN HARMONY WITH NATURE”

Eversince I started carving in the year 2000, I have not stopped. I have created my productions which have taken me to countries like China; Angola and Kenya for exchange programs; workshops and symposiums respectively.

Such achievements have driven me into working on hard stones such as granite; marble; leopard rock and hard sepentines.

My combination of formal studies and art practise have helped me to be identified into the culture sector of Zimbabwe , where I am one of the consultants and advisers.

I have sold my pieces to the far east Asian countries , America and in Netherlands. I also have permanent collections in China; Angola and Kenya.

My message to the world is to try in every sense to keep the natural ecosystem, as it is the foundation of every life and my ambition is to reach every corner of the world with this message in practice.
