Obert was born in 1966 in Chinhoyi, Mashonaland West.
He started his career as an assistant to Luke and Francis Mugavasi at their stone quarry in Guruve. An excellent play-ground to start an aspiring sculptors future, with the choice of any stone you may choose – not a luxury given to most artists these days, who have to travel great distances to fetch their stones.
He is one of the few working couples in sculpture, with his wife Letwin Mugavasi, a well-known sculptor in her own right – they can often be found sculpting at their home and studio where they currently live along with their and daughter, in Chitungwiza.
Oberts work is varied, which proves his diversification as a sculptor. From beautiful abstracts full of movement and grace, to a simple bird or small cluster each one has its own character, as if given a name by Obert himself!
Obert has exhibited at Gavazi Sculpture Garden in Guruve and at the National Gallery Of Zimbabwe from 1988 1992. His pieces can also be found at Chapungu Sculpture Park and at the National Gallery in Harare. He also featured in the 2003 Calendar of
Collectors of his works come from far and wide from the U.S., USSR, Norway, Canada, Holland, Japan, Denmark and the U.K.
Obert aspires to be one of the leading sculptors in Zimbabwe.
