Vernon V. Nyagweta – Zimbabwean Sculptor
Born on April 23, 1984, in Rusape, Manicaland Province, Vernon V. Nyagweta is a passionate Zimbabwean sculptor who discovered his artistic calling at an early age. As the fourth of six children, he began experimenting with small stone artifacts during his primary school years, learning from his elder brother.
Though he initially pursued industrial work unrelated to art after completing his Ordinary Level studies, the pull of sculpture was undeniable. In 2004, Vernon relocated to Harare, where he trained under the mentorship of his renowned elder brother, Edious “Eddy” Nyagweta, one of Zimbabwe’s finest contemporary sculptors. Under Eddy’s guidance, Vernon quickly mastered the craft, developing his unique artistic style.
By 2005, Vernon was sculpting independently, and after a brief hiatus in 2006, he returned with full dedication in January 2007, shaping a career that continues to flourish. His work primarily focuses on human figuratives, torsos, heads, birds, raindrops, and abstract forms, with occasional forays into animals and fine art. He believes in an organic approach to sculpting—allowing the raw stone and his vision to work in harmony.
Vernon draws inspiration from nature, daily life, cultural heritage, and spirituality. He skillfully carves from a variety of materials, including Springstone, black, brown, and green Serpentine, Green Opal, Dolomite, and other high-quality stones that lend themselves to exceptional artistry. His deep connection with stone drives his mission: to elevate Zimbabwean sculpture to new heights and inspire the next generation of artists.
