Simon Chidharara

Born in 1980 in Nyanga, a scenic region in Manicaland Province near the Mozambique border, Simon Chidharara discovered his passion for sculpting at the age of 11. Under the mentorship of his older brother, Kenneth, he developed his skills, shaping raw stone into expressive works of art.

After completing his secondary education in 1998, Simon decided to pursue sculpture full-time, embracing his creative calling. A lifelong learner, he remains curious about human nature, stating:

“Any topic interests me. I like to know more about what makes us do the things we do and feel the way we feel.”

Artistic Journey & International Recognition

Simon’s work has gained recognition both locally and internationally:

  • 2007-2013: Served a residency with ZimArt, further expanding his global reach.
  • 2014: Conducted sculpting workshops at Havergal College, a prestigious private girls’ school in Toronto, where he taught students the technique and precision of handling hand tools.
  • Has exhibited in several group exhibitions at the National Art Gallery of Zimbabwe (Mutare).
  • His sculptures are held in private collections and galleries across Holland, the UK, South Africa, Canada, Germany, and New Zealand.

Artistic Vision & Themes

Simon’s sculptures deeply celebrate women, whom he views as central to life:

“Women are the center of life. I would like to celebrate everything about them.”

Now based in Chitungwiza, Simon Chidharara continues to create powerful, thought-provoking works that honor femininity, human emotions, and cultural identity, cementing his legacy as a significant figure in Shona sculpture.
