Provenance: The work was purchased by the client in approximately 1990 from a Gallery in Atlanta, GA that was storing a large collection of his sculptures that were going to be on exhibition at one of the local Universities – Emory University and Moorehouse College.

This sculpture is currently in the USA.

The sculpture depicts an abstracted figure having both human and animal attributes; an elongated head atop a gracefully curving body; Zimbabwean, 20th century.

Size: 25.5 inches high by 11 inches wide by 6 inches deep

Marks: J. C. Mariga, numbered 1165

Condition: Overall, the condition is good with minor scratches

Comments: Joram Mariga is a highly prized Zimbabwean sculpture, famous for abstractions of baboons.

A real treat here in Wimbledon. At Cannizaro Park a superb open-air exhibition of Zimbabwean sculpture. There were many pieces, large and small, and a wide variety of different stone used in imaginative ways. And, overall, a real sense of Africa, linked to a long artistic tradition.

I was told that many of the sculptors had been trained within their own families: a father, an uncle, a grandfather, passing on the old skills.
