John Takawira – 1st Generation Shona Sculpture

John Takawira (1938–1989) was a titan of the Shona sculpture movement. As one of the founding members of the “First Generation,” his work moved away from the more literal depictions of animals and folk stories toward a raw, monumental exploration of the human spirit and Shona mythology.
