Canaan Ngandu

Born in Goromonzi and second born in a family of eight. He was raised by his grandmother, firstly in the Mufakose township and at six years old moved to the Chitungwiza township. However his ancestral rural home is in Chiweshe.

Canaan was educated to secondary level where it became apparent that he was talented in art and was identified as one of the best artists in the school. Although it was only drawingin the beginning, Canaan believes it was the foundation of his career in sculpting.

He started sculpting, alone and untutored, although admits he was inspired by passing renowned artists’ studio’s such as Kennedy Migeri and Moses Masaya, where he would watch endlessly their techniques and skill. It took about one year before Canaan could master how to use the punch and chasing hammer andthen had to convince his grandmother to buy him a piece of raw stone to practice on.

His first piece was around 60cm in height and that was the beginning, he produced a bird and from that sculpture his confidence grew, especially as he’d sold it within a week!

Canaan enjoys sculpting creative sculptures combining nature with human feelings in both modern and ancestral beliefs.

Abstracts, torso’s, birds, heads – all of which are displayed in galleries across the world such as; Holland, Belgium, Germany, United States, United Kingdom, Canada and South Africa.

Canaan is happily married and has two children.
