Date of Birth:

Benard Nkanjo

Benard was born on 28th September 1970, in Highfield, Harare. He grew up and was educated in the place of his birth, Highfield, which is a high-density housing area approximately 15 km north of Harare. During school he would visit his relative Garrison Machinjili and it was there that he was first exposed to stone sculpting. Once he had seen the work he knew that he wanted to do nothing else other than become a sculptor. So after completing his OLevels in 1992, he became apprenticed to Garrison. He spent three years working with Garrison, before leaving to work on his own. He now lives and works in Chitungwiza.

Over recent years his work has become increasingly popular amongst local and international buyers. His sets of birds engaged in varying activities have proved highly successful. A keen observer of nature, he regularly visits the citys dams and rivers to watch birds in their natural habitat. He is never without his sketchbook, which he uses to record their different poses which he later translates into sculpture. Benard makes use of a combination of media, using stone for the bodies and metal for the legs of the birds. Occasionally wood is also used. His attention to detail is obvious, the composition of the group is outstanding, they are always full of movement, some are feeding whilst others look up as if watching for danger. All of these qualities make Benards work simply irresistible. He works mostly in the various Serpentines but prefers to use Opal, when it is available. Always cheerful and hard working, Benard is starting to find a place for himself in the ranks of Zimbabwes new generation of stone sculptors.
