Linos Tonderai Sowa was born in 1978 in Nyanga in eastern Zimbabwe. He began sculpting with his step-father, Julius Chinhoyi, in 1995. He worked with Julius for two years and another two years with Rosemary Chakanyuka in Chitungwiza before joining the Arts Centre in 2002. Tonderai is a full-time artist at Chitungwiza Arts Centre.

Tonderais sculptures are usually made from hard serpentine stone such as springstone, cobalt and fruit serpentine. He has exhibited every year in the annual Chitungwiza Arts Centre exhibitions, and his work has been included in exhibitions in Australia, South Korea, Europe and USA.  He has also visited Angola and in 2013 he won second prize for Best Sculptor at the Chitungwiza Arts Centre.

He is happily married with three children and his hobby is playing social soccer in a local team called D11 FC.

A real treat here in Wimbledon. At Cannizaro Park a superb open-air exhibition of Zimbabwean sculpture. There were many pieces, large and small, and a wide variety of different stone used in imaginative ways. And, overall, a real sense of Africa, linked to a long artistic tradition.

I was told that many of the sculptors had been trained within their own families: a father, an uncle, a grandfather, passing on the old skills.
