Tendai

Mushawepwere was bornin Mutoko, in the Chief Nyamukoho

Chichobve Kraal. He is the third born in a family of four , three boys and one girl. He is of Nzou

Samanyanga Totem.

Tendai

grew up in Chitungwiza were he completed his primary education at Seke No. 1

Primary School and his Ordinary Level at Seke NO. 4 High School. At school

Tendai was good at drawing and he found it easy to carve contemporary

visual art under Chikusa Padzuwas supervision.

He

started his sculpting career in 1994. He was taught by Chikuwa Pasuwa and

worked with him for two years. He became a full time artist when he decided to

venture on his own in 1996.

What

inspired him to carve is his black culture andhistory, which he believes is becoming defunct in

carving. He wants to help revive this art

with other artists like him. He does not only carve sculpture related

to hisculture butthat whichrevolves around him,

in the present day of his life and the life in itself as a whole.

He

markets his art mostly in Europe & the USA through collectors who visit his gallery

from time to time.

For centuries, botanical gardens around the world have featured sculpture throughout their grounds… Now, the (Naples Botanical) Garden is capitalizing on its “Gardens of Latitude” tagline to present more than 200 stone sculptures from Zimbabwe, which rests in the same 26 degrees north and 26 degrees south band around the equator that is the Garden’s focus.

Brian Holley, Executive Director at the Garden, says “I think just providing the opportunity for people to see the quality of sculpture that is being produced in Zimbabwe will be a surprise to most people,” he says. “But even more important will be the way that the sculptures enhance the experience of visiting the garden.”
