Kuanda Maliti was born in 1978 and completed his O’Levels in 1995.  He started working in an engineering company for four years, thereafter he began sculpting, when he was in the industry.

He started sculpting in 1997 and in his first year sold a piece to the National Gallery  of Zimbabwe.  Kuanda began to develop his works from stone to integration with metal, this was due to competition within the field of arts and art movements.   He likes to work with rock at times and on metal –  this is his latest mood.

Kuanda likes to work on semi-precious stones and hard stones.  If he is sculpting metal he favours mild steel and wrought iron.

Kuanda quotes “The sky is the limit for my works but I still need to break through the international market and create any extra ordinary piece which is never done yet. I am a member of Chitungwiza Arts Centre.”

It’s hard to imagine the difficulty involved in transporting more than 300 stone sculptures from Zimbabwe on a world tour – some weighing so much it takes five men to lift them – but the team behind ZimSculpt has managed this tedious task for over a decade, and brings this beloved Zimbabwean art form to VanDusen Botanical Garden for its third and final year in Vancouver.
