Josphat Makenzi was born in 1975 in Rushinga District, Mash-Central in Zimbabwe.

He went to Chimhanda Secondary School where he completed his ‘O’ Levels in 1992.  After completing ‘O’ Levels he decided to embark on a career in the making of stone sculptures.

Josphat has produced stone sculptures in hard stone called Dolomite, specialising in pieces such as Flowers, Torsos, Elephants and others.

“It is my humble request that he be assisted in marketing my work on the international stage through access to exhibitions that take place in Europe and America.  If it is at all possible that you can assist me, I would be very grateful, because the making of stone sculpture is the only way I make a living and it is a passion that I strongly believe in.”

A real treat here in Wimbledon. At Cannizaro Park a superb open-air exhibition of Zimbabwean sculpture. There were many pieces, large and small, and a wide variety of different stone used in imaginative ways. And, overall, a real sense of Africa, linked to a long artistic tradition.

I was told that many of the sculptors had been trained within their own families: a father, an uncle, a grandfather, passing on the old skills.
