David was born on the 2nd February 1946, in the Eastern Highland town of Mutare in Zimbabwe. His brother John Gwatirwa taught him to sculpt and helped direct his talent. In 1969 he moved to Victoria Falls, a famous tourist resort town in Zimbabwe where he worked at the Craft Village for two years. After leaving the Victoria Falls Craft Village, David has been with the Canon Paterson Craft Centre to this present time.

David’s work can be distinguished by the clean economical lines he uses.

A real treat here in Wimbledon. At Cannizaro Park a superb open-air exhibition of Zimbabwean sculpture. There were many pieces, large and small, and a wide variety of different stone used in imaginative ways. And, overall, a real sense of Africa, linked to a long artistic tradition.

I was told that many of the sculptors had been trained within their own families: a father, an uncle, a grandfather, passing on the old skills.
