Benjamin Mashaya was born in 1986 in Nyanga, a beautiful mountainous region near the Mozambique border with a strong sculpting tradition. The Mashaya family is one of Zimbabwe’s most repsected sculpting clans.

Benjamin was educated in Nyanga completing his O levels before he left school in 2003. He started carving at a tender age mentored by his brothers who were already successfully established as artists.

‘I made up my mind immediately’ he says, ‘sculpting would be my lifetime career’.

His sculptures portray mans affinity to human nature. He attended several exhibitions. He wishes to travel to many countries and showcase his skills.

It’s hard to imagine the difficulty involved in transporting more than 300 stone sculptures from Zimbabwe on a world tour – some weighing so much it takes five men to lift them – but the team behind ZimSculpt has managed this tedious task for over a decade, and brings this beloved Zimbabwean art form to VanDusen Botanical Garden for its third and final year in Vancouver.
