Euwitt Nyanhongo

Euwitt, Born in Nyanga district of Zimbabwe and attended school in Nyanga at Mazarura Primary School and Emmanuel Secondary School.

Euwitt is the son of the Zimbabwean Sculptor, Claude Nyanhongo, one of of the piioneers of stone sculpture. He is also a brother to Gedion and Agnes Nyanhongo, two prominent sculptors who belong to the generation.

 

Born in such an important and prominent family,Euwitt began sculpting at an early stage of twelve.At school he excelled artifacts.During school holidays he often assisted his father in finishing off sculptures.He developed his sculptures time and again under the guidance of Claud,Agnes and Gedion.Euwitt began sculpting full-time in 1993.

 

Euwitt prefers to work from the hard Springstone,Lapidolite,Leopard Rock,Opal and Nyanga serpentine found in the area where he was raised.He believes that his inspiration is derived from the Nyanga mountains and it is in these Spiritual rocks that provide him with the vision,so he often spends time working in the mountains.

 

His work portrays humans affinity with nature, animals, birds, spirits and mythological beliefs of Shona tribe .In the past few years, Euwitt has created some excellent large pieces of sculptures in addition to his small and medium size sculptures. He has gained much recognition and has been invited to join an annual residence Sculptor Program at Chapungu Sculpture Park, offered to a selected group of sculptors who demonstrated great potential and commitment. He has been at Chapungu Residence Program from September 1996 to September 1999.
