HAND-WOVEN BINGA BASKETS

The Tonga tribe reside in a remote village in northern Zimbabwe called Binga situated along the shore of Lake Kariba.

The Tonga people enjoy enviable skills in fishing, hunting, boating and artistic craft, from basket ware to beadwork.

These handcrafted woven baskets are made by a co-operative of women in the village and ZimSculpt have represented their work in all of their world tours.

Each basket is woven from the middle using river reed which is dyed darker to give it the contrast.

The baskets were originally designed to tell a tale – whether for friendship, marriage, courtship or to advise a suitor you were single.

They are now collected as decorative objects for the wall or to serve bread or chips in.
